Rain and thunder roll into Atlantic Canada to start the week

Heavy rain moves through Atlantic Canada on Monday, with the chance of embedded thunderstorms. Greatest hazards with storms that develop will be locally heavy downpours and strong winds

Atlantic Canada is in for another round of wet and stormy weather as a sharp upper trough moves across the region — bringing more rain, embedded thunderstorms and gusty winds to begin the week.

The system follows days of unsettled weekend weather, and is expected to bring instability to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland beginning Monday.

While the storm energy stays lower than in previous rounds, the most serious threat is heavy rain, with some nocturnal storms possible through Monday night and into Tuesday morning. Residents should monitor for potential weather alerts and prepare for reduced visibility or water pooling on roads during periods of heavy rain.

Newfoundland in line for the heaviest rain

The majority of Monday's rainfall is expected in Newfoundland, with locally very high totals possible overnight, particularly between Green Bay, Gander and Bonavista.

Storms may flare up after dark, but the overall severe threat is low due to the lower storm energy.

Some areas, especially throughout central and western Newfoundland, may receive more than 50 mm of rainfall, causing pooling and localized flooding.

Maritimes not spared from the stormy start

Thunderstorms are also expected in parts of central New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I., particularly on Monday afternoon.

Some of these storms may produce strong wind gusts, while brief, heavy rain reduces visibility and slicks roads during the evening commute.

The sharp trough is expected to move east by early Tuesday, bringing an end to the rain in the region by morning.
